Location Description

Cambridge - the town of champions and sporting opportunities abound. Cambridge is 24 kilometres south east of Hamilton. The town is the heart of its local district, which is renowned for its farming and horse-breeding industries. Known as the Town of the Trees, Cambridge is very scenic, with tree-lined streets, heritage buildings and parks. The town has a number of art galleries and antique shops, and a full range of general purpose shopping and community services. Cambridge is just 15 minutes from Hamilton International Airport and Lake Karapiro.

Attractions

  • Cambridge has a number of historical buildings built in the mid-to-late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Cambridge Primary School, for example, was built in 1864 and was originally the militia hospital.

  • Cambridge has a number of walks around the town's sites; for example, the Heritage Trail and the Tree Trail, both just under two hours long.

  • Lake Karapiro is an excellent venue for picnics, barbecues and water sports, particularly rowing, for which it is renowned. It is located 8kms and just five minutes south of Cambridge.

  • Visit the Karapiro Dam, power station and museum.

  • The Maungatautari scenic reserve is a 2000-hectare mountain range to the south east of Lake Karapiro. Its two highest peaks are Maungatautari (795m) and Pukeatua (719m). It was the site of many fortified pa, the remains of which can still be seen from the roads near the mountain. South east of Lake Karapiro, a popular area for bush walks. Obtain permission from the farmer to cross his property to reach the bush line. Travel to Karapiro cross the dam, approx. 6kms then turn right into Kicks Road, opposite the school.

  • Maungakawa Scenic Reserve is 9kms and 15 minutes drive from Cambridge. Walk through native forest. This is the site of the Gudex Memorial.
